Running for a Cause

Running for a Cause

After an ultramarathon, 7 marathons, and 5 half marathons over the past 3 years, I’ve been trying to figure out what to do next. When I first started running, it was about proving something to myself. About changing my way of thinking, relaxing more, and focusing on hitting a big goal. Apart from wanting to do a 100 mile ultra, I have been trying to decide the motivation.

The American Cancer Society has a team called DetermiNation that pays your race fee in exchange for fundraising. Perfect! I like running, helping others, and talking to people about healthy living. The race is the Denver Marathon on October 9th, 2011. You can help by clicking here to donate!

Looking ahead now with this type of thinking, I would like to do one of the toughest 100 mile courses in the country for a cause. The race is the Leadville 100. Yes, 100 miles on my feet at 12,000+ feet altitude for almost 30 hours. Initial thought is to raise money for the Children’s Hospital or another local charity. Still need to see how can maximize the positive impact of this running habit I have formed.

All ideas are welcome!

  1. Nice Alex! How about teaming up on a cause like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation? Or creating a race if your own to benefit charities? Leadville 100…NUTS!!!
