Advice to College Students
1:42:00 – 8.5 miles
A friend posted a status update yesterday that she was going to speak to college students and offer career advice. She made the joke that they should get a degree and then work in a job that has nothing to do with it. While it’s funny, it seems to happen often.
Now, students shouldn’t take this as a statement that college is not important. I’ve always thought that college is not a place you go to learn facts. It’s more of a place to learn how to think and manage yourself. For me at least, high school was all about learning the test. Figuring out what you had to get the grade and move on. College is about gaining a skill to make money and survive. Two different approaches.
So my advice to college students would be:
– Pick a degree that has a topic you enjoy. – Ask questions to everyone ranging from Professors to Deans to Students. – Learn through experiences.Take college as the opportunity to learn more about yourself and how you tick. Without this, you won’t find a job you enjoy and could struggle to understand what you want to do.
