Texting a Running Challenge

The colder temps can make it more difficult for some to keep up with their exercise routine. It’s dark when we wake up, dark when we drive home, and the cold weather brings out the whiners around us.

Fortunately, I have friends that send me text messages like this to keep it interesting:

Texting a Running Challenge

These are not challenges I can ignore. Actually, I had to ignore it for about a week due to being sick, but it played over and over in my mind. This is the type of challenge I need as part of my training.

With my dog at the side of the treadmill, I took on the challenge. I hit start, cranked up the incline to 10% and started to up the speed. For the first few seconds I was excited as it felt good. Then the incline finally reached 10%. Here we go!

Throughout the 30 minutes, I ranged from 3.5 – 5.5 mph. A mini goal was to walk as little as possible while still gaining some ground. To accomplish that, I did intervals. This meant going at a faster pace for 3-4 minutes and then power hiking for 2-3 minutes. It is also a good way to train the body how to recover faster from high exertion. Visually, I was picturing running going up Hope Pass in Leadville. This training will not only become part of my regular training, I am going to make it harder.

Towards the end of the 30 minutes it felt like it was getting easier. As you know, “easy” is mostly perception … and perception can be changed. Join the 30at10 challenge and post your results! It’s a fun adventure!
