Remember Why You Do What You Do

Recognize Why You Do ItQuite often I forget why I do certain things. It’s good to remind myself why I run, why I chose my career, and what my next step will be. You can just let things happen and live free, or you can take action. I’ve talked to many people that say just go with the flow. Yeah, I’m good with that.

Then again, life is not infinite, just the possibilities are.

There are many things I don’t let bother me. Rarely do I hold concern about people’s view of me. I have had many (many) people approach me about topics on this blog to let me know their opinion. That’s great! Whether positive, negative, or controversial … that doesn’t matter. What I enjoy is that it caused someone to think and react. They thought something. It caused a conversation. That is an important part of life.

“I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”
~ Bill Cosby

On a recent flight, I was seated next to an energetic lady that spotted my copy of Runner’s World. I know she spotted it, because she announced it to everyone within 6 rows.

“Do you run a lot?”
“Yeah, I’ve done some running.”
“Cool as I’m running my first half marathon in March!”

Her questions that followed reminded me of what I have learned over the past 3 years. All normal questions:
– How much should I be running?
– What should I be eating?
– Why does the side of my leg hurts when I run?
– How do I stop blisters?
– How fast should I run?

It’s amazing how fast 2 hours can go by! Eventually, she got out of me that I have done a few marathons and a 50 mile ultra. For most people, that usually slows the conversation as some can be intimidated. Not her. She took the opportunity to ask more questions.

That is pretty cool! I’ve never been one to be intimidated by others that know more, meeting a celebrity, or at a job interview. Everyone that you meet has something you can learn from. That doesn’t always mean it’s a positive thing you can learn from them as you can certainly glean things not to do. There is also the fact that not everyone can relay information to another.

Remind yourself why you do and act the way you do. Take a look around you and see what you can learn from others. The good and the bad.
