My Almost No Running in Germany
When I travel for work, I almost always increase my miles. Not because I’m doing less, but due to the fact I don’t have family responsibility. I also don’t have to cook, clean, or provide transportation. In some sense, I have a ton of extra time.
On a recent week-long work trip to Germany, I had grand plans of putting in a 40+ mile week. It was the same week of the US vs Germany World Cup game, so knew I wouldn’t be running that day. Otherwise, I figured I could get 5 runs in along the Rhine River. Afterall, I was 2 weeks out from Silver Rush and 6 weeks from Leadville 100. The need to keep running was heavy on my mind.
Unfortunately, United Airlines doesn’t have much of a commitment to it’s customers. I touched on that in my post on thoughts before Silver Rush 50. No need to get back into how they lost my luggage for 80% of my trip.
When luggage did arrive on Thursday afternoon, I made it a solid effort to run Friday and Saturday before flying out.
Friday morning, after a night of drinking Alt Beer at a pub watching the World Cup match, and eating currywurst with dessert of spaghetti ice cream, I awoke at 5am for a 7 mile run. I followed the water to the old town center of Dusseldorf and enjoyed the sights, buildings, and history it had to offer. Great weather and views!
Saturday was departing day, but I had the morning to run. I went 7 miles down the Rhine River and back to log 14. Between the two runs, was able to get in 21 miles for the week. Here are some photos of what I got to see on the run:
Least you got the oppertunity to see some pretty country if not get the overall distance you were looking for.
