36:00 – 3.4 miles

I’m still getting used to the 15 year old treadmill in the basement. As the snow and ice weather start to descend upon Colorado, I have no interest in gaining the normal 10 pounds over the holidays. Maybe 3 or 4, we shall see. Last weekend my wife and I rearranged the basement, moved an old 37″ tv (the not flat kind that weighs more then me) up to the treadmill, and laid down some extra carpet. Makings of a nice little getaway to watch tv while in motion.

I won’t deny it, I love watching tv. For several years I worked at a Blockbuster Video, which is where I got my first taste of working in management, but that’s a post for another time. Up until 2003 I could tell you about almost any movie of the past 50 years. If you needed a recommendation, I could ask you 2 or 3 questions and have the movie for you. What happened in 2003, I became a father.

From 2003 my priorities and perception in life changed. Prior to this time, I was comfortable in my routine and what I could do. There’s something about having a child and being responsible for another human being’s life that can wake you up. Any goal I achieved prior to this seemed to pale in comparison. Going forward, I was achieving goals I didn’t even consider setting.

I’m asked quite often how I can be crazy enough to run a marathon. Then I completed an ultra marathon and words seemed to escape people. Most often I get the gaping mouth open followed by the “why in the world would you do that if not being chased” type of responses. Everyone has a different perception of crazy, but the line can be moved.

I have a whole speaking presentation I’m working on around this topic that includes stories and examples of how the world has changed their perception. Imagine if during the late 1600’s someone was to say they were going to fly to the moon and bounce around there. They would have been ushered in line to the Salem Witch Trials and burned at the stake. Through the availability of information and connection of people, we are able to collectively accelerate the changing of perception. It starts with one person voicing an idea that can cause a chain reaction leading to a great amount of change.

So what’s that idea or goal you’ve been holding inside? Time to release it and realize others may be looking for you.
