Young People Don’t Read

Young People Don’t Read

I was having an IM conversation with Amanda yesterday and she was mentioning an article about young people not reading as much for pleasure. This sparked off a friendly debate. My comment was that young people are forced to read books without given a choice (not every single classroom by the way) on what books to read. In school, students should be allowed to have a list of books to choose from so that they can find something that interests them. I understand that every student should read Shakespeare. What if the students read Shakespeare and then had a project that involved making a modern day version? This would invoke excitement in reading the book, creativity to write a new version, and increase writing skills. As Amanda pointed out to me, it is all about the test in the U.S. educational system.
