Felt fairly easy to get up at 4am. Granted, had the usual internal conversation of why am I up and do I really want to go to the gym. I’ve started using scare tactics with myself of “either go to the gym or die.” While it seems a bit extreme, there is a bit of truth to it. We need to move to stay healthy … even if it’s just 45 minutes a day. Do something!

The next piece that took me awhile to figure out (about 2 years) was the eating aspect. I’m not a big guy, but I can put down 2-3 dozen wings with little thought. At Thanksgiving time, I had the reputation of a bottomless stomach. Sounds fun, but it started to catch up with me once having kids.

Less sleep, more stress, bad eating habits = unhealthy.

My first steps were to start cutting out any food that was deep fried. I take that back … I have cut back on deep fried foods. So instead of 2 dozen wings each week, I have a dozen wings (or so) a month. The second step was to reduce portion sizes. Instead of filling my plate to the max, I started using smaller plates and keeping portions no bigger then my fist.

And the third step was to just drink water. Replace out drinks with water and drink. There are many scientific reasons for this, but I just tell myself it flushes out the bad and fuels the body.

These some like easy ideas in concept, but really it’s changing the way you think. Jamie Oliver, renowned chef and tv celebrity, gave a speech at the T.E.D. Conference about this topic:
