Kids with Dinner and a Movie

One of those weeks when you wonder if there were fantastic things. Sometimes the negativity can overshadow the moments of happiness through the week. Here are four fantastic things for this Friday …

1. 28 Hours of Driving
Okay, how can that possibly be fantastic? Well, I kind of like that stuff. It’s a great challenge to hold my brain together while 4 kids sit behind me and throw (sometimes literally) every obstacle at me. Excellent training for running ultras!

2. Visiting with Family
While funerals are generally not happy occasions, it does provide the opportunity for family to gather that don’t see each other very often. It is a time to share memories, exchange stories, and talk to people. You quickly find a group that has gone down a similar path in life that you can relate to and really enjoy spending time together. The kids get a chance to explore a new environment and just be kids.

3. Four Kids and Me
My wife flew to Pennsylvania for the burial, so I drove from Minneapolis to Denver with 4 kids and had them for the week. I let the kids know that their routine would not be the exact same as it is with mom. Really it couldn’t be as I’m not home in the morning/afternoon, so haven’t practiced all the details. I started mornings off with a medley of music videos from my computer:
Kids Music at Breakfast
The playlist ranged from Pumped Up Kicks to Afro Circus. There were many smiles and laughs getting us out the door on time!

We also did dinner and a movie night which the kids enjoyed. Of course, they were a bit wound up to get to bed very easily. Always fun to mix it up a little!

4. Supporting Work Environment
I have only been with this company for 5 weeks, but their response to me having to leave town and working from home has been tremendous. At one point I did consider bringing my 3yo into the office, but pictured me getting nothing done. Working from home, she at least has plenty of activities to keep her busy. With my little assistant, I was able to be on all of my meetings, write a strategy summary, and even come up with a few new ideas. Sometimes a temporary new environment can help move things forward.

Looking forward to a great week ahead with next weekend being the Boulder Marathon!
